You are expected to independently read weekly in this class, if
not daily. Sometimes time will be set aside specifically for independent
reading, but you may also read any other time that all of your work is
completed. Your goal is to choose a book that you will read start-to-finish
over time. You should choose something that is interesting and not too hard,
not too easy. You will be writing information in your folder about what you are
reading- this will be graded- and are expected to fill this out throughout the
week every week.
Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, a different person will present to the class about their independent reading. The expectation is that you write your name and the title of your book on the board and tell the class a summary of what you have read so far. Your classmates will then ask questions based on what you have shared or will choose from a variety of questions to spark further conversation. These questions are randomly listed on your Featured Reader folder page. The list of questions is included below. Classmates in the audience are also expected to write key points about your story in their folders.
The purpose of this activity is to open up dialogues about a variety of books and printed materials. It's a great way to preview new books when deciding on something fun to read. It helps build connections between classmates and helps to make public speaking more comfortable within a safe setting.
Question choices in the folders:
Why do you recommend this book?
What connections did you make to your own life?
Who is your favorite character and why?
Will you continue reading this book?
