Based on posts from all six classes, here is a simple definition of Haiku:
A Japanese style of poetry.
The poem has three lines-
Line 1: 5 syllables
Line 2: 7 syllables
Line 3: 5 syllables
They do not typically rhyme. They do not typically use similes or metaphors.
They are usually about nature and the seasons.
They often convey a mood or emotion.
They create an image in the reader's mind.
Today's assignment:
1. Write a Haiku. Write it in your journal. Check the description above to see if you did it correctly. Write more than one if you want so you can choose the best one to enter in the contest.
2. Meet with at least THREE other classmates. Read each other's poems and write a positive comment on the side of the page. If you have ideas for making the poem even better, TALK TO THEM.
Examples:
I am first with five
Then seven in the middle --
Five again to end.
Green and speckled legs,
Hop on logs and lily pads
Splash in cool water.
Monday came and wept
like rain falling from the roof
my hands caught each tear
I hear falling rain
I hear my thoughts falling too
all i want is you.
shut tight your eyes now
hold fast the breath in your lungs
be brave when I can't
An old silent pond...
A frog jumps into the pond,
splash! Silence again.
Autumn moonlight—
a worm digs silently
into the chestnut.
Lightning flash—
what I thought were faces
are plumes of pampas grass.
