Roots Test

Congratulations! Nearly everybody improved their scores last week- and some people improved by an impressive number of root words! If you haven't checked out the graph near the door with the class averages, make sure to take a look at it next time you're handing in work. It's set up just like the graph in your folder. Make sure that you're labeling dates and scores on your graph just like I did on mine.

Here are our scores so far- the average number of roots correctly defined on each test:
Aug. 22: 4.96 (68 students)
Sept. 5: 9.45 (74 students)
Sept. 30: 16.19 (73 students)
Oct. 21: 24 (71 students)

Not only are we improving with each test, but the increase in the average score is greater with each test!

Before you let this all go to your head, let's talk about mistakes for a minute. Here are some of the common mistakes observed on this test:
- spelling a definition wrong (If it's close, I might be able to count it, but if it spells a different word, I have to count it wrong.)
- poor handwriting- if I can't read it, it's wrong
- poor handwriting in your folder- if you can't read it, you can't remember it correctly
- memorizing the answers in order... and then writing them in the wrong place
- having identical answers to a person sitting next to you (I'm not saying you cheated- I'm sure you were just studying your words together, right??? Whatever the explanation, you need to reconsider your approach because your wrong answers are all identical more often than your right answers. Make sure your answer makes sense!)

The next test is Nov. 11. Make sure that you are updating the list in your folder now so you can study every day. When you have free time on the computer at home or at school, play the root words review games on the right side of my page. If you click on the arrow next to the title of a game, you can see the list to review.
